Know Your Birthstone

Throughout time and across cultures, gemstones have long been associated with deeper meanings. This includes the tradition of each calendar month being connected with a particular gem, known as a birthstone. To discover your birthstone and the meaning behind it, read on.

January: Garnet
Red garnet is a stone of positive emotions, said to denote loyal friendship and love.

February: Amethyst
This purple gemstone was believed by the Ancient Greeks to aid clarity of mind and today is still said to bring emotional balance.

March: Aquamarine
The blue hues of aquamarine are said to be calming and protective, helping their wearer overcome nerves and have courage.

April: Diamond
The most celebrated of gems, and the hardest, diamond is symbolic of strength, mental clarity, faithfulness and eternal love.

May: Emerald
The green hues of emerald have long been admired by royalty and celebrities. Legend has it that this gemstone is representative of unconditional love, vitality and compassion.

June: Pearl or Alexandrite
Milky white pearls are associated with positive attributes that include purity, innocence and clarity. Alexandrite is one of the rarest colored gemstones, admired for its varying hues. It is said to promote calm and peace for its wearer.

July: Ruby
Ruby’s fiery red hues have made this a gemstone revered for its beauty throughout history and often associated with love. Wisdom, confidence and energy are among the many other positive attributes that ruby is also said to bestow upon its wearer.

August: Peridot
With its bright green hue, peridot is thought to bring positive energy, acting also as a calming influence upon those who wear it.

September: Sapphire
Second to diamond in terms of its strength, sapphire was often worn by royalty in the belief it would protect them and impart wisdom. In addition to its regal connections, sapphire is seen as a symbol of integrity, clarity and loyalty.

October: Tourmaline or Opal
Unlocking creativity and aiding self-expression are among the properties associated with opal. Tourmaline is also inspiring, nurturing mental strength, and self-confidence.

November: Topaz or Citrine
Topaz is associated with joy, generosity and good health, promoting truth and good fortune. Citrine is also a stone of positive emotions, said to boost clarity of mind and contentment.

December: Tanzanite or Turquoise
Tanzanite is associated with soothing, acting as a calming influence on the body and mind. Turquoise has traditional connotations of protection and well-being, and was often the choice of stone for amulets in the past.
